When is it? Ash Wednesday falls on 46 days before Easter Sunday. It's calculated from Easter Sunday, which moves with the lunar calendar, so the date can shift by several weeks from one year to the next. Next time round is Wednesday, February 10, 2027, 148 days from now.

Which weekday does it land on? Always the same day: every one of the eleven years in the table puts Ash Wednesday on a Wednesday. What to expect on the day. Nothing closes. Shops, offices, schools and transport all run as normal, because this is a day people mark rather than a day they get off. That said, restaurants, florists and retailers often build around it, so booking ahead is sensible if you're planning to go out.
